The body’s system of daily clocks
Circadian rhythms are approximately daily changes in functions such as alertness, body temperature, hormone release, and digestion. Nearly every tissue has its own timing machinery. A coordinating clock in the brain, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, receives information about light through the eyes and helps synchronize the wider system. Food intake, activity, and other environmental signals also influence rhythms. 1
That makes a sleep schedule more than a habit you repeat at bedtime. Your body receives timing information throughout the day. Record waking, light exposure, meals, activity, and sleep when assessing a recurring timing problem. Biological timing and work obligations can conflict even when your routine is consistent. 1
Recognizing a circadian rhythm disorder
In delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, sleep occurs later than a person wants or needs, with difficulty waking for daytime commitments. Advanced sleep-wake phase disorder shifts the problem in the opposite direction: pronounced early evening sleepiness and very early waking. Diagnosis includes the effect on daily life; an early or late preference alone is insufficient. 2
Other patterns need a different explanation. An irregular rhythm can divide sleep into several episodes; non-24-hour disorder can produce sleep times that drift relative to the day. Travel and shift work can create a mismatch between biological timing and local obligations. These patterns should not all be treated with the same instruction to wake earlier. First establish whether the problem is insufficient time, a persistent timing mismatch, or difficulty sleeping even at a suitable time. 23
Evening light: brightness, duration, and sensitivity
In a laboratory study of 55 adults aged 18 to 30, researchers measured how evening light suppressed melatonin. Sensitivity varied substantially: the light level associated with 50% suppression ranged from about 6 to 350 lux between individuals. Ordinary indoor lighting could produce a meaningful response under the study conditions. 4
The study measured hormonal responses during controlled, prolonged exposures. It did not establish a universal household brightness limit or show that a certain amount of melatonin suppression causes insomnia. Timing, intensity, duration, and individual sensitivity affect the response to evening light. Looking only at the color setting on a phone misses the surrounding room and how long the exposure lasts. Treating one filter as a complete solution goes beyond this evidence. 4

Using light to move sleep earlier or later
Clinical light therapy uses timed exposure to help move sleep earlier or later. NHLBI describes morning light-box use for moving sleep earlier, and late afternoon or early evening use for moving it later. Those are different treatment goals. Someone who already becomes sleepy too early does not necessarily need the same intervention as someone whose sleep is delayed. 5
For an ordinary daytime schedule, seek daylight during the day and reduce bright artificial light as bedtime approaches. If you are trying to correct a persistent timing disorder, ask for guidance about when to use light, how long to use it, and how to track the response. Eye conditions and medicines that increase light sensitivity are reasons to discuss a light box with a clinician first. Night workers need a plan tied to their shifts, not an automatic sunrise routine. 5
Record sleep timing on workdays and days off
Keep a sleep-timing record covering both workdays and days off. Note when you attempt sleep, when you believe you fall asleep, when you wake, and when obligations force you out of bed. Add major light exposures and whether sleep feels easier on a schedule you choose yourself. Bring the pattern to a clinician if it regularly interferes with work, safety, or ordinary activities. 6
Assessment may include a medical history, examination, a sleep diary, and sometimes actigraphy, which records patterns of rest and movement over several days. In selected cases, clinicians measure biological timing using temperature or hormone patterns. These tools answer different questions; a single bad night cannot reveal your whole circadian rhythm. 6
